With the couple Chinooks lately we’ve managed to see grass in our yard. That means I start thinking of gardening. Last year we started a family vegetable garden and had a great time and a great crop. After so many years of buying the standard garden store flowers and having them die of heat, drought or hail damage I felt like giving up. But last year when we went for the edible garden it was great! We started by heading down to the Garden Show and learning some great tips. There’s fun stuff for the kids to do there too. My daughter planted a sunflower seed and watched it grow and bloom which she loved tremendously.
For Christmas this year a friend gifted me a membership to the Calgary Horticultural Society. I was a great idea.
With it came a bag of 3 paper white bulbs to plant in the garden, 1 year membership, anniversary magazine, gardening newsletter and a zone map of the city of Calgary to help you find the right zone for your house. It was very easy to activate the membership. All I had to do was call and provide them with some information and then a week later I received my card in the mail along with the latest newsletter. With the membership I get 8 newsletter, member only plants in spring and fall, access to view private gardens, gardening forum and discounts on books, workshops, retailers and bus trips.
Along with the membership my friend also gave us some books
The Calgary Gardener – Calgary Horticultural Society
Gardening Month by month in Alberta – Alison Beck
Gardening Under the Arch – Millarville Horticultural Club
Additionally I got a copy of Cooking Under the Arch
Armed with all of this we should be ready for an awesome garden this year. Maybe we’ll see you down at the Garden Show this year checking out the latest tips and tricks for gardening in Calgary? If you want to become a member check out their site here.
