What is better than a Chinook day in Calgary? How about a Chinook day and shopping for some fresh produce at the Kingsland Farmers Market! I had been reading about the 2011 Opening Day on Facebook and Twitter, and decided that Hannah and I should head over to check things out.
The indoor market is located at 7711 Macleod Trail S, and is open Thursday through Sunday. The first thing that I noticed was that there was plenty of parking. The building used to house a car dealership so there is no shortage of outdoor space. We were able to secure a parking spot very close to the entrance, though I will warn you, the lot was quite slushy, so be prepared to either carry your child over to the building, or have them wear their boots! Considering that we went on their first day open, I would imagine that this problem will be resolved before too long.
Once inside, we were greeted by numerous vendors, selling everything from baked goods to glassware. After a delicious sample of sushi, Hannah and I made our way over to one of the many produce stands to pick up some fresh apples. Our stomachs starting growling at the site of all of the goodies, so we also found some cookies to munch on and some pound cakes to bring home for the freezer.
Some of my favourite features of the Farmers Market are the wide aisles, plenty of seating space if you want to enjoy your findings before you leave, and the public washrooms. I also liked the diversity of the items available. It seemed like there was something new around every corner. I cannot wait until more vendors open up shop, and more produce becomes in season.
Hannah and I had a great time at the Kingsland Farmers Market, and we cannot wait to go back again soon!
