This New Year’s Eve we packed up the kids and headed out to Golden just across the border. We booked a night in a cabin at the Timber Inn just south of Golden and had a blast! The drive may seem long but only 3.5-4 hours away from Calgary you can step into another province and have a great mountain experience. Golden is a nice little town along the #1 highway and is in the Kootenay region of south-eastern British Columbia, and lies between two mountain ranges – the Purcell Mountains and the Rocky Mountains, and at the junction of two heritage rivers – the Columbia River and the Kicking Horse River. There is a lot to do here! The kicking horse ski hill is located here but there are also other great activities to do with the kids like skating, sledding and cross country skiing. As you head into the town the drive is quite spectacular. They are in the midst of an expansion and it is quite impressive to see the new highway and see how much work has gone into building it!
Just before the centre of town turnoff there’s a great information place on the north side of the highway. You can find all the information you need from the helpful staff.
For New Year’s we stayed at the Timber Inn. This place is about 20 minutes south of Golden in Parson. The place is great for families with young kids. We rented a cabin and also bought a ticket to their New Year’s Eve dinner and dance. The owners, Marianne & Rainer were so accommodating. They set a table in the back for us with the kids since it was right beside a room where they had toys and a little TV with some kids show playing. That meant the adults could enjoy some great german food while the kids came and went from the table. The live music was a hit with the kids and when we were finally able to convince the kids to head to bed we were able to get them to sleep in the privacy of our cabin away from the party. The next morning breakfast was delicious and it definitely is high on the list for New Year’s celebrations for us. This was the perfect way to celebrate the new year with young kids.
So if you’re looking for an overnight trip to the mountains from Calgary Golden is a good choice is you are willing to do the extra drive. And if you do head our try to stop for a visit at the Northern Lights Wolf Centre – it’s an amazing way for the kids to learn about wolves and see a real pack. There are also some great hiking trails and even sports for the extreme enthusiasts. There’s a bit of everything for everyone. And who knows maybe you’ll just fall in love with the place like we did and find yourself a little piece of land so you can visit over and over again!
