Before I had kids I loved hiking. Now that I have kids I still do. We have just had to change some of the trails we choose for 2 reasons. One to take into account the extra weight we now carry with my son in a carrier and diapers, snacks, changes of clothes etc that bog us down. Two to take into account that my daughter now hikes along with us and can’t do really long trails.
Tunnel mountain in Banff was perfect for this. We headed out on a beautiful day. The trail was fairly busy but at a kid’s pace it suddenly didn’t seem to bug me anymore. It was nice not to be in a rush to get to the top! My daughter did great. It took us a little over 1 hour to reach the top. We had to do a little bribing along with way with promising of lunch at the top but there’s quite a view all the way up that it minimized the whining! Heading down was quite a bit faster but still not too steep for a child. The biggest reward for my daughter was the view – she really did feel like she accomplished something since you are on the top of the mountain. She doesn’t quite understand yet that the trail starts half-way up the mountain and that it is one of the shorter ones in Banff but we’ll let her believe she conquered one of the HUGE mountain tops! Just don’t tell her!
