Finally Spring seems to be here! Is it just me or are the winters getting longer? Sometimes I feel so lucky to be in Calgary during the winter because I know the rest of the country has it much worse but still… It just goes on and on.

It is great to finally get out into our Calgary Parks and enjoy the trails, the play centers and the fresh air.

One of our favorite parks over the years has been the Prince’s Island Park downtown because of all of the celebrations that go on there. Just about every weekend something exciting is going on. We have heard some of the best and most creative music there from all over the world. There is a play area, picnic areas, and canoe access to the river. There are great restaurants such as the River Cafe nearby to eat at or one can bring a bag lunch from home.

The Canada Day Celebration and the Folk Festival later in July are attended by people from all over the world. It is a great highlight in Cowtown so definitely check those out!

Did you ever wonder why it is called Prince’s Island? It is not because some toad was turned into a prince there and it was not named after royalty either. It was named after Peter Anthony Prince who was a lumberman. He came to Calgary in 1886 from Quebec and founded the Eau Claire Lumber Mill. In 1947 the land was purchased by the city of Calgary from the Prince family to develop park land. Today it is one of the most beautiful and creative parts of our city throughout the spring and summer season.

See you at the park!

Enjoy this Christmas classic…

I have teenagers. I have no ears left. Way too much drumming going on. Is it just me or are all the songs on the radio to the same beat? Bands are weird now too. Pick a direction, a color, or a trench. Is “headly” what you get when fighting off lice? Beaver Fever was definitely a disease you did not want.

I am thinking that 12 drummers drumming would drive me quite nuts today. It would be right up there with “let’s invite 30 children over and let them decorate our walls with icing!” Or maybe we could walk all of the neighborhood dogs today at the same time. That would be fun… Or maybe now would be a good time to clean out all of our cupboards, that basement crawl space, and the attic too! NOT…

I am opting out tonight and going for something sweet and peaceful.

Tomorrow is Christmas and we hope that you did enjoy The 12 Days Of Christmas!

Here is The Biebs With Santa Claus Is Coming To Town!

And one more Christmas favorite of all time just for fun!

Doing Christmas carols no less!

Well we could all get out our cell phones and pick a new ring tone…

Remember when the phone was attached to the wall and no kid in his right mind would want to carry one to school? Ahhhhh those were the days. Now you can contact me on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or the old fashioned way… EMAIL!

We use to use crayons when I was a little kid. The other day I was at my friend’s house and even the 5 year old had an IPAD.

So electronic Christmas it is…

Here are some of our new traditions, because these days we don’t have to wait for the CBC special. Now thanks to YouTube we can get them any time we like. Watch them again and again right up to Christmas Day and beyond!

Have a Charlie Brown Christmas!

Lords A Leaping… really?

Where are we finding the guys in tights? I did take Ukranian Dance lessons for nine years as a child. That was the closest I ever seen to a leaping man of any kind. My brother could do the Russian splits pretty good. I would die if I even tried to polka fast these days. I am out of breath on the stairs when I get up to go get another bag of chips!

Tonight we are going to do some singing with the guitar and if the weather is really nice we may go out Christmas Caroling. When we come in we will drink some more of that Apple Cider and if we are not too tired gather around the tree and tell some stories of Christmas Past.

Here is a fantastic video featuring the Rusalka Ukranian Dancers from Winnipeg, MB. I love this because it features the many different kinds of dancing. If you want to see Lords a Leaping this is the best place to do so!

Want to try your own dance? Try JibJab. You can put yourself and your family into the story. They have all kinds of cool things including Starwars, A Christmas Carol and lots of funny dances. Last year I did one with my now adult family of mother, father and brothers. They all laughed like crazy when I posted it on their Facebook pages last Christmas!

If you friend me on Facebook you can watch it. I tried to post it to the Kids In Cowtown Page but it won’t go there. So you could also just go to jibjab and make your own. That would be cool too.

Hmmmm… I don’t think that is going to be “kid friendly”… I grew up in Saskatchewan. I remember the first time some young woman told me she was a “Dancer.” I asked her, “Do you mean in the ballet?” Seriously… I had no clue!

Ok I have a better idea. Mom and the kids can put on Christmas music and dance around. That sounds like fun. Since it is Friday night that we are getting ready for we could even make sure we have some Christmas movie favorites in the house like The Sound Of Music, The Wizard of Oz, Home Alone, or Mommy’s favorite (because it has Arny in it) Jingle All The Way!

Also there are some awesome things to get into tonight on YouTube. The kids will absolutely love to hear dogs barking and cats singing to favorite Christmas tunes! These are just a couple to wet your appetite. There are a whole lot more if you search them on You Tube!

Maids a Milking – Have you ever tried to milk a cow? I have. I grew up on a farm. Seriously if more people had to milk a cow there would be a lot less milk consumers. They are stinky. They kick. They slap you with their big dirty tail and they try to push you off the milking stool with their girth. I would rather take up sumo wrestling!

Imagine back to the beginning of time when there was the very first person fighting the calf for the milk. Seriously… how did he get that idea in the first place?

Well we did milk in the Egg Nog yesterday so let’s talk about something else that is white and wintery. I met a friend from Trinidad a few months ago and they told me that they did not know what a snow angel is. So find a foreign friend push them out in the snow and make an angels right now. Just kidding…

You go first and show them how. Play nice!

Get some toboggans and sliders out or go skating.

Swans a Swimming

Those are nice. Swans a swimming. Not sure what they would swim on around here. More like swans squawking while stuck in the ice! Not a very humane endeavor… Quick call Animal Rights! Someone tried to make a swan swim in the Bow River. How did they even convince a swan to not fly south for the winter? Do we actually have swans here? I mean, outside of the zoo?

Ok we can just think about beautiful swans swimming in real flowing warm water. I feel a Mexican vacation coming on…

Ok swans are definitely not swimming, but we can go swimming at the pool. Or we can just focus on the warm, flowing liquid part and make some excellent hot seasonal drinks tonight. Here are a few of my favorites.

Once you have made it get some of that fabulous clear wrap for baskets that has little Christmas trees on it and put the poppycock directly into it. Wrap it up in a ball and tie it with some golden ribbon for a delightful effect.

8 – 10 Cups of popcorn

1 Can of mixed salted nuts

Then mix on the stove top 1/2 cup of corn syrup. 1/2 cup of white sugar, 1/2 cup of margarine, 1 teaspoon of vanilla and bring it to a boil on the stove mixing it at all times. Cook to a soft ball stage and then pour it onto the popcorn and nuts and thoroughly mix. Don’t touch it or eat it until it cools down because it is nasty radical hot at first.

Five Golden Rings… of kubassa

You have to love the other editions of this song. The Ukranian version is the one I grew up with. The Canadian version was made famous by Bob and Doug Mackenzie. It may not be suitable for children.

In the celebration of golden rings I guess it is time to do some gift giving.

Over the years I have found a few recipes that I love to make into gifts at Christmas time. I usually double and triple the recipes and have a bunch made and go around like Santa Clause giving things out wherever I go. If someone drops by I have boxes of wrapped chocolates ready to give but really that is the last resort after all of the good stuff is gone.

Brittle In A Nice Box

This is a real nice brittle that you can make with peanuts or you can make it with almonds and put the chocolate on top. Either way it is awesome all broke up into pieces in a nice box or tin as a present.

Bean Salsa With Mexicano Kewlness

Make up this fantastic bean and bacon salsa and put it in a glass jar. Chill it until you are ready to gift it. Then put it in a basket with a red handkerchief in the bottom of it. Add a nice bag of colorful taco chips and a bottle of hot sauce for some flair. If you really want to go all out get a CD of Latino music. Makes a very zesty present or a fantastic offering for a potluck party. Enjoy…
