Asparagus Festival – 2011 Update
We headed out again this year to the Asparagus Festival.
Last year was a very cold weekend and it snowed but this year was a great weekend! We headed up Sunday morning. Edgar Farms is about a 1 hour 45 minute drive from Calgary. The cost for our family was $15 since our 2 year old son was free. This year “Aspara-guy” met us at the entrance and the kids went wild for this character! It was a walking and talking asparagus spear. Not sure what the fascination was for the kids but they spent the entire visit searching for him!
The barn housed a petting farm for the kids as well as a bean box (rather than sandbox) and hay bale fort. Outside there was a colouring area, face painting, bean planting station and edgar farm tatoos for the kids.
Outside there were bundles of asparagus for sale along with other produce from the farm and even asparagus crowns for you to try your own hand at planting them in your home garden. Cafe Divine from Okotoks were preparing asparagus in delicious dishes and local artisans and farmers selling goods and produce. A bake sale provided sweets as well. We bought a plate of asparagus dip with chips and grilled asparagus spears (my daughter’s choice) and fought with the kids to get some bites of our own!
Again, we were driven out to some of the fields while the owner talked to us about asparagus and their farm. It was fascinating to hear of all the work that is required to grow asparagus. The tractor stopped and allowed us to get out and venture into the field to see the asparagus and even break of a piece and eat it raw fresh from the ground. It was hard to stop the kids from gorging!
We bought some asparagus and had already packed a lunch so since it was a beautiful day we packed the kids up in the van and headed to Bowden on the way home and found a playground and enjoyed a picnic lunch. We left at 10am in the morning and got home by 2pm with full bellies.
Danielle is mom to a 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son and always looking for fun things to do with the kids. She blogs over at fourdayshome.
